I’m honored to be nominated for best special packaging this year at the Grammy’s for the Underoath box set. I was fortunate enough to see all of the boxes that were in the running, and I have to say, it’s a total blessing to be included in such a list.
I was fortunate enough to have the bands trust due to working with them on prior releases, and if I remember correctly, the only real direction from the band was that it have an art piece of some kind on the cover, which got me really stoked. Coming up with a concept and handing it off to someone else to visualize is really exciting to me. I must have looked over 100 portfolios before finally stumbling onto Drew Beckmeyer’s work. It was perfect for what I was visualizing, and the band was all in, so then the work started. You can see some of Drew’s sketches below, including a panel that wasn’t used.
Ryan Russell was also a blessing to have available for the project. He was on hand with the band in the studio to take some shots of them during the entire recording process, and they add a ton of value to the art. Ryan has a way of capturing the personality of the people he shoots, and I think these shots are some of my favorites of his, ever.
Thanks to everyone who picked up a copy of the box set, and if you haven’t and you’re a fan of the band, it’s a must own. If you’d like to see more images of the final product, you can do so here.
